Manager Infrastructure & Operations | Aga Khan University, Karachi

 Reporting to the Director, Information Technology, this position is important and critical to deliver mission critical ICT services to ensure seamless healthcare, academics and administrative ICT services and operations globally. This position under global service delivery department of ICT provides direct support to all AKU international institutes & hospitals. This position is also responsible to drive key initiatives in global Electronic Health Records (EHR) Program as Technology Lead.

The mandate of this position is to ensure overall uptime of 99.7% throughout the year for all the critical services hosted in local and international data centers of AKU. This position requires an excellent blend of high technical and strong management skills with additional focus on negotiating cost effective solutions with vendors worth multi million dollars annually.

Specifically, you will be responsible to;

  • manage Global Datacentre Operations (Pakistan, UK, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Afghanistan)
    • facilitate timely identification, escalation, resolution, and follow-up of all issues related to data center operations and its infrastructure
    • lead and provide in-depth expertise in all initiatives related to data center operations, business continuity planning and disaster recovery solutions
    • develop, coordinate, and maintain comprehensive data center testing program
    • evaluation and adoption of new technologies to fulfill business needs and stay up to date with industry best practices
    • keeping data center physical footprint as low as possible by implementing cutting edge technologies such as Virtualization and cloud technologies
    • status reporting, budgeting, strategic planning, expense processing, contracts management, documentation and other activities related to data center operations and projects
    • plan and align capacity requirements within data center (power, cooling, floor/rack space, environment etc.)
    • technology assessment in the area of Data Center operations
    • maintaining disaster recovery sites globally to meet required organization recovery point objective
    • plan & execute data center planned downtimes globally and ensure timely availability of services.
  • involvement global Electronic Health Record (EHR) Program. (Kenya, Pakistan, Afghanistan & Uganda)
    • work with Meditech (vendor) team to determine and evaluate hardware requirements for the implementation of Meditech application
    • as solution architect, design robust, high available and fault tolerant architecture of EHR application
    • development of effective end user computing strategy for EHR solution
    • evaluation of technology risks with its mitigation strategies
    • development of RFPs for the procurement of EHR hardware
    • evaluation of technical proposals from different vendors and finalization of Meditech compliant solution
    • ensure implementation of overall Meditech solution which includes integration of all the required software and hardware configurations and disaster recovery site
    • ensure smooth connectivity between datacentres and remote locations for EHR application accessibility
    • ensure arrangement of all technology requirement for all the ongoing activities such as dictionary training and assessment sessions
    • weekly status reporting to program team
    • application module lead of two critical applications MIS/CMS/UNV and Scanning & Archiving.
  • global advance systems implementation and support to Pakistan, Kenya, UK, Uganda, and Afghanistan
    • work with Meditech (vendor) team to determine and evaluate hardware requirements for the implementation of Meditech application

    • provide guidance for operational design, implementation, and support of systems infrastructure along with performance tuning and capacity management across the organization
    • monitor and manage datacenter & advanced systems infrastructure and communication systems usage and performance
    • formulate, evaluate, and review advanced systems and infrastructure products based on technologies, best practices, systems, and client requirements
    • create and maintain operational dashboard and develop/maintain training manuals, policies checklists and procedures
    • ensure 24/7/365 support coverage and compliance with service standards for servers and overall IT infrastructure to all global locations
    • develop a security plan for advanced systems and ensure continuous security improvement
    • work with technical teams (network, systems, hardware, storage teams, etc.) to drive significant improvements in automation that promotes pro-active approach to service availability management.
    • create and maintain operational dashboard and develop/maintain training manuals, policies checklists and procedures
    • upgradation of obsolete server operating systems globally
    • lead consolidation/virtualization initiative and establish schedules and procedures to ensure maximum utilization of resources.
    • provide leadership in supporting Hospital and university wide systems like, HIS, Email, PACS, Moodle, ERP, ERP CS, and cloud-based applications such as one45 etc.
    • evaluation, design, and implementation of cloud architecture for multiple services like AKU.EDU web farm and M-Files
    • supervise and ensure the efficient operation of the servers, storages, and communication equipment. This includes managing the IT staff responsible for monitoring and diagnosing network and hardware problems
    • making and advertising downtime calendar for quarterly maintenance and leading all activities during the downtime
    • technical design, Implementation, and management of disaster recovery site for patient care and administrative services
    • propose and implementation of disaster recovery solution of all mission critical services such as email and ERP
    • ensure required RTO/RPO of services hosted at disaster recovery site.
  • being Solution Architect involve in evaluation of new technology solutions related to infrastructure, patient care and academic services globally
    • involve in evaluation of all new big projects/initiatives like PACS, EHR Linac, Raiser edge and management of SOC services etc.
    • work with respective vendors to finalize high available and robust architecture of each application
    • participate in solution demos, evaluation processes and technical discussions
    • prepare and present budget requirement to implement overall product from ICT side
    • make all the required arrangements for the successful implementation
    • work with all the key stakeholders for introducing new technology solutions and upgrades. 
  • work with IT Audits (Global)/ Security implementation and Vulnerabilities fixing (Global)/ Disaster recovery support (Global)/ IT budgeting (Global) 
    • involve in all ICT audits throughout the year which includes external ICT audit, cap and JCIA audit. Ensure to maintain all the audit requirements throughout the year and present all the relevant documents to the auditors to fulfil their requirement
    • ensure to fix all the vulnerabilities identified by security team related to infrastructure in multiple applications before go-live such as one.aku.edu and family hifazat etc.
    • being lead of disaster recovery operations ensure that all the disaster recovery sites globally are operational
    • involve in global ICT budget exercises and coordinate with international ICT teams to formulate global budget requirements.

    • train staff for the potential uses of available technology
    • contribute to team efforts by accomplishing the required results
    • hold team meetings to review goals and initiatives, promote team building and work to provide career paths for staff.
 Eligibility Criteria / Requirements:
    • minimum Bachelors’ Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related disciplines; Relevant industry certifications would be an advantage
    • minimum 10 years of experience in the field of IT infrastructure with minimum 3 three years of experience in a leadership role
